My work involved solving and designing the fastening system for the hanging luminaires on the palm trees. The main challenge was that drilling or installing internal structures was not an option, as this could damage the trees. Additionally, the palms had irregular diameters, which made it unfeasible to take precise on-site measurements for workshop fabrication and subsequent modulation and transport; processes that would have been excessively complex and slow.

The solution was to design clamp-type rings capable of adjusting to each palm’s variable diameter. These rings allowed the luminaires to be suspended through a tubular system engineered to withstand the strong winds present at the site. Leveraging the palm’s natural texture and the assembly’s own weight, the system achieved a stable fit without the need for invasive fixings.

At first glance, the luminaires may appear to be simple elements; however, behind their unassuming appearance lay a significant technical and structural challenge.

I also led the production of a series of clay totem-like sculptures with abstract forms. I hand-modeled them and had them fired in a wood kiln, a process that imparts nuances, textures, and traces of fire, making each piece unique and unrepeatable.

The real complexity of the project lay in achieving visually identical modules without resorting to molds, since that approach would have required an excessively high budget. Compounding this was the coordination of the different stages of the process: optimizing transport logistics, producing the internal metalwork supports while accounting for the clay’s shrinkage coefficient during drying and firing, and maintaining constant communication with the team to ensure precise installation. The entire process was carried out with the goal of executing the project successfully from the very first prototype.
