Inspired by Edward James’s Las Pozas in Xilitla, this series of hanging luminaires seeks to infuse the secret passage , leading from a bookshelf at the restaurant Tres to a nightclub through a stairway passage , with surrealism, futurism, and a sense of the ancestral. The project set out to give a more organic feel to the metal structure installed along the stairs, since, as the building is protected, no direct intervention on the walls was possible. As Las Pozas is a work conceived within the jungle, I sought to capture that sensation by proposing vines to cover the metal grating, lending it greater warmth and emotion.
The luminaires were handcrafted in clay in Oaxaca and reinforced with an internal metal skeleton that ensures proper suspension and structural stability. Both the dimensions of the pieces and their transport represented a significant challenge, given their considerable weight and scale. This required extremely precise measurement and planning for their installation, since, once hung, the pieces could not be moved or readjusted.
